Course content

Work and Organizational Psychology is an applied area of psychology where theories and research in several areas of psychology and other disciplines are used to analyze, describe and make predictions about issues at the work setting. The course’ core objective is to assess what factors will enable effective work performance, individual thriving at work, and positive attitudes that facilitate work experience that enriches employers and employees. The course also seek to examine how work experience is influenced by individual’s perception and also the objective features of the work setting. Some of the topics we will examine during the semester are individual differences, recruitment & selection, training & development, performance measurement, leadership, workplace motivation, stress & productivity, quality of work life, remote working structure, and organizational change.

Knowledge

The student

  • have knowledge about the various psychological traditions as applied to work and organizations
  • have knowledge of the evolution of the field of work and organizational psychology
  • have knowledge about the centrality of individual differences in work and organizations
  • have knowledge about interpersonal, organizational and system wide factors influence work and organizations
  • have knowledge of various themes in work psychology and their independent and overlapping insights to understanding work and organizations
Skills

The student shall be able to

  • formulate problem statements regarding the relationships among relevant work variables and analyse the multi-layered nature of these relationships
  • communicate relevant research findings with clarity to a defined number of colleagues within a given time
  • conduct a job (work) analysis and engage in competency modelling of a chosen profession
General competence

The student

  • can apply the principles and insights of work and organizational psychology in their own work
  • understand the multi-layered nature of work issues such as job satisfaction, job performance, and leadership effects
Teaching and working methods

Lectures, seminars, and case-based learning.

Required coursework

Participation in mandatory seminars in addition to submission of written work or oral presentation, graded as pass/fail. Further information on content and scope is provided by the course convenor at the start of the course.

Form of assessment

The exam consists of two papers. Both are individual assignments. The first paper is to be handed in about halfway through the semester. The second paper is to be handed in at the end of the semester. The two papers cannot overlap, meaning that themes used in the first paper cannot be used in the second. Each paper counts 50% towards the final grade. Students will be given written feedback to each paper in addition to the grade.

Performance is assessed with the ECTS letter grading scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F means fail.
