Students must have a high proficiency in Norwegian
- Different approaches to translation, including the role of translation in language learning and teaching
- Development of practical competence (linguistic, textual and cultural) in translation between Norwegian and English, through working with different genres and text types and with different relevant digital and other tools
- Contrastive analysis of various language dimensions relevant to translation (choice of vocabulary, collocation, idiom, level of style, register)
Learning Outcome
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will have achieved the following learning outcomes:
The student
- has broad knowledge of central problems in connection with the translation of text
- is familiar with some central theoretical approaches to translation
- has knowledge about contrastive differences between English and Norwegian grammar and language use
- has knowledge of the role of translation in society, and within the field of language learning and foreign language teaching
The student
- can translate non-technical texts from different genres into correct, idiomatic and communicatively appropriate written language
- can identify and discuss important and relevant differences between Norwegian and English usage
- can identify and discuss translation challenges, applying academic and linguistic knowledge to make and argue for well-founded choices in the practical work with translation
- can use relevant digital and other tools confidently, critically and creatively to aid their translation, and to develop their linguistic competence in English
The student
- has insight into relevant academic and professional ethical issues relevant to translation studies
- can plan and carry out varied assignments and projects over time, alone or as part of a group, and in accordance with ethical requirements and principles
- can communicate important academic subject matters such as theories, problems and solutions, both in writing and orally
- can exchange opinions and experiences with others with a background in the field, thereby contributing to the development of good practice
Teaching takes the form of interactive lectures and seminars. Practical work with exercises in and out of class forms a large part of the course. The learning platform Canvas is used for course information and guidance. The course requires regular and active participation in seminars.
- To take the examination a student must have submitted 2 individual written assignments within specified deadlines during the course. The assignments must be approved by the teacher no later than 2 weeks before the exam
- An attendance record of at least 75 % according to the semester plan. Students are responsible for registration of attendance
Three day individual take-home exam graded on a scale from A to F. A is the highest pass grade and E is the lowest pass grade. Language skills, practical translation proficiency and theoretical content must satisfy minimum requirements in order for the candidate to obtain a pass grade. Detailed guidelines and assessment criteria will be specified in the semester plan.
