Course content

This course explores Geographic Information Systems (GIS) which is a valuable tool in spatial planning and research, both in forestry and applied ecology. Using combined thematically-oriented short instruction videos and exercises students will learn and put fundamental principles of GIS into practice.

The students will learn about the methodological aspects of spatial data. It includes collecting, managing, analysing and presenting of such data. A larger section of the course is devoted to spatial analytical methods. Another topics that are covered in the course are elementary cartography, introduction to remote sensing, spatial data models and its sources. Students will get training in effective communication with a map as a tool.

Learning Outcome

After successful completion of the course, the student will have the following knowledge, skills and general competence.

The student

  • is acquainted with both vector and raster spatial data, its strengths and weaknesses
  • has basic knowledge of spatial data manipulations and analyses
  • has an understanding of cartography and means of effective cartographic communication
Skills

The student

  • is able to critically acquire spatial information and be critical of the sources for spatial data
  • is able to apply relevant analytical GIS methods to spatial data in order to solve real-life tasks in forestry and applied ecology
