The candidate will conduct an independent artistic PhD project at an international level. The outcome must be of professional relevance nationally and internationally. The artistic PhD project will be developed in dialogue with peers within the artistic field. Over a period of three years, candidates will develop their artistic PhD project from a critical perspective so that it will contribute to the development of the field. The course will help develop candidates’ artistic autonomy and integrity. Academic supervision is a central element of the programme, in order to ensure regular follow-up and to provide a link to the professional community. Candidates are expected to be active in meetings with the academic community at the Norwegian Film School at Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences.
Learning Outcome
- is at the forefront of knowledge with regard to key practices, directions and discussions within the field for their own artistic research project and masters the fields artistic issues and methods
- can evaluate the expediency and application of different methods and processes in their own artistic research project considering the abundance of methods in artistic research
- can by means of their own artistic research project contribute to the development of new knowledge, new theories, methodologies, interpretations and documentation forms for artistic research in film and related audio-visual arts
- can formulate problems, plan and execute artistic research in film and related audio-visual arts
- can carry out independent artistic research of a high international standard in film and related audio-visual arts
- can in their own artistic research handle complex academic issues and challenge established knowledge and practices in film and related audio-visual arts
- can identify new relevant ethical issues through their own artistic practice and carry out artistic research with professional integrity
- can manage complex interdisciplinary tasks and projects within their artistic research
- can communicate their own artistic research through recognised Norwegian and international channels, addressing peers as well as the general public
- can, based on their own artistic research, assess the need for, initiate and practice innovation relating to film and related audio-visual arts, including at the intersection with other fields and practices

Candidates are admitted to the doctoral programme on the basis of a project proposal for an artistic PhD project with a plan for the work process and results. As a general rule, each candidate will have two academic supervisors, one of whom will be appointed the main academic supervisor. Candidates will be assigned a main academic supervisor at the start of the research period. Candidates can further develop the project description in consultation with the main academic supervisor and may submit a revised project description within three months of the start of the research period. Candidates will conduct the independent artistic research project under academic supervision in accordance with the plan.

Evaluations are conducted in accordance with the Inn University quality system’s description of quality work in research programmes.
The requirements relating to the artistic doctoral outcome are described in Section 11 of the regulations on the philosophiae doctor (PhD) degree in artistic research.
A condition for applying for a final assessment is that the courses on Theory, methods and ethics in artistic research (20 credits), Artistic research in film and related audio-visual arts (5 credits) and the Project-specific training component (5 credits) have been completed and approved.
Candidates must apply for final assessment in accordance with the requirements set down in Section 13 of the regulations on the philosophiae doctor (PhD) degree in artistic research at Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences.
Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences will appoint an Assessment Committee in accordance with the regulations.

The course will be assessed by the assessment committee in accordance with the learning outcomes for the course and the general requirements set down in Section 11-1 of the regulations on the philosophiae doctor (PhD) degree in artistic research at Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences.
