Course content

The course provides an introduction to artistic research specifically addressing film and related audio-visual arts, with an emphasis on theories, methods and practices specific to artistic research in this particular field. The candidate will communicate their project with regard to the performing/creative aspects as well as context, theory and methodology. The training will support the artistic doctoral project and contributes specialised depth and breadth.

Teaching and working methods

This course is offered by the Norwegian Film School as a series of courses and activities. The Norwegian Film School is committed to ensuring that the training programme has an international profile in which teaching activities are conducted in collaboration with artistic doctoral programmes within other Nordic film educational institutions.

The working methods used in this course may include:

  • participation in seminars, workshops, courses and conferences organised by the Norwegian Film School, independently and through international collaboration with institutions within the same field
  • participation in seminars with presentations
  • presentations delivered in Norwegian or English to peers

All courses are evaluated. The time/date and method are decided in consultation with student representatives. The course coordinator is responsible for ensuring that the evaluation is carried out.

Required coursework

Participation in scheduled courses and course activities are compulsory. Candidates are expected to participate by way of presentations at one international conference as a minimum. The course will be passed when the candidate’s participation in the scheduled courses and activities has been approved.

The courses are approved by the head of the PhD programme.
