Before the thesis can be submitted, all obligatory courses and the requisite number of elective courses must be completed with a passing grade.
The MA thesis is an independent scholarly work that shows understanding, reflection and intellectual maturity. The thesis itself must document the candidate’s abilities in research methods and scholarly argumentation as presented in a substantial written work.
Learning Outcome
A candidate who has completed the course has the following total learning outcomes, defined by knowledge, skills and general competence:

- can carry out an independent limited research or development project under supervision and in accordance with prevailing rules and norms of research ethics

- can present and disseminate their own research and development project
- can participate in professional discussions on digital communication, culture and media
Candidates submit a suggested thesis subject at the end of the second term and will on the basis of this be assigned a supervisor. Work on the thesis is to be done in the third and fourth term.
Candidates work on the MA thesis individually, and the thesis work is performed under supervision. The guiding norm for the length for individual theses is 80-120 pages.
- Presentation of the thesis project and active participation in MA project seminar (autumn term, 2. year)
- Scholarly presentation based on the thesis project at, and active participation in, the yearly student conference (spring term 2. year)
- Participation in agreed-upon supervision, as presented in the supervision agreement
Individual written MA thesis with an adjusting individual oral exam. Both exams must receive a passing grade for the candidate to have passed the course.
The exam is graded on a scale from A to F. A is the highest pass grade and E is the lowest pass grade.
The examiners will award the written thesis a preliminary grade. If the preliminary grade is a failing grade, no oral exam will be scheduled, and the final course grade will be F. If the preliminary grade is a passing grade, an oral exam will be scheduled. The oral exam will potentially adjust the grade by one level in either direction. If the oral exam is evaluated as a failing grade, the final course grade will be F.
The oral exam consists of two parts. The candidate will first give an oral presentation (lecture) on the thesis, of between 15 and 20 minutes. There will then be an oral examination based on the MA thesis.
