2BTP232 Biotechnology laboratory project
- Number of credits20
- Teaching semester2025 Spring
- Language of instructionEnglish
- CampusHamar
- Required prerequisite knowledge
The course is suited for Bachelor students who are interested in learning how to make use of living organisms to create products and services. The exact mandatory prerequisite knowledge will depend on the project work topic; this will be assessed individually. Basic knowledge in biochemistry, microbiology, and molecular biology will be required for most of the projects. Competence in the English language at level B2 is strongly recommended.
- Student enrolled in Experimental Project (either wet lab or bioinformatics) in Biotechnology will participate in a research project in progress at the department, performing experiments independently or in groups of two, under the supervision of a faculty member. The experimental procedures used, as well as the results obtained, are to be organised and documented in a laboratory notebook or as a soft copy if the thesis has a bioinformatics focus. Additionally, the work will be presented in a written report containing an introduction to the field, an explanation of the methods used, the results obtained, including a discussion of their relevance in the context of existing research in the field of study.
Learning Outcome
Upon passing the course, students will have achieved the following learning outcomes:
- Students have acquired knowledge about relevant theories, methods and research as well as the scientific literature related to a specific topic in biotechnology chosen by the student.
Students
- can plan and design scientific experiments in the lab or computationally
- can obtain, analyse and visualize scientific data
- can present, interpret and discuss the results from their own experimental research in a written report
- are able to perform experimental and/or computational scientific work independently, and/or in groups
Students
- can apply their knowledge and skills in scientific projects
- can present and communicate scientific data, both verbally and in writing
-
Students are expected to work independently on the experimental project under the supervision of a professional in the field. The project work will be based on scientific methods including wet-lab and/or computational methods. A Supervision Agreement between the student and supervisor shall regulate the responsibilities of each party, and the scope and duration of the project.
