In this course, the students will train themselves in the practical use of a multi-room studio, recording various ensembles of different sizes. They will gain knowledge and skills about foldback, placement of musicians, how to record various instruments, how to treat performers and musicians to get the best performances recorded. The studets will practise performing different roles, they will analyse genres and instrumentation to find appropriate solutions to different recording situations. They will further train their skills in Pro Tools and practise the theoretical knowledge of studio gear and setups.
After this course, the students will be able to tackle more advanced studio situations and make suitable recordings of most types of instruments and ensembles typically found in a studio. They will know when to capture a performance live, or when to apply overdub-techniques.
They will be prepared to use the studio appropriately to fit different genres and adapt to more specific tasks coming in later courses.
The Norwegian Qualifications Framework for lifelong learning (NQF) defines the levels of qualifications in the Norwegian educational system. These levels describe what a learner knows, understands, and can do as a result of a learning process. Categories in NQF are defined as:
Knowledge: Understanding theories, facts, principles, procedures in the discipline, subject area and/or occupation.
Skills: Ability to utilise knowledge to solve problems or tasks (cognitive, practical, creative and communication skills).
General Competence: Ability to independently utilise knowledge and skills in different situations.
The candidate:
- Has insight into the nature of performance and human factors in the studio
- Has developed an understanding of roles in the studio
- Has basic production genre knowledge
The candidate:
- Has knowledge and skills in foldback and overdub techniques
- Has knowledge and skills in Live Studio project management and workflow
- Has advanced skills in the use of Pro Tools
