About the Course

This course gives the student insight and training in techniques and methods used in the art of songwriting. These includes harmony, melody, and other musical aspects, but also tools and insight in developing the “other half” of the song: the lyrics.

The students will practice songwriting both individually and in changing groups, experiencing different approaches to the creation of musical material in song form.

Songwriting fundamentals covers several areas important to the early parts of the music production process. Rights ownership in music and lyrics, developed individually or in groups, can be important and lasting sources of income for those involved in music production.

Learning outcomes - Knowledge

The candidate:

  • has gained insight in song analysis
  • has knowledge of concepts, processes and tools used for writing lyrics has knowledge in compositional methods
  • has knowledge of popular music history
  • has knowledge of arrangement, rhythm functions and genre knowledge in composition, performance and production

  • can apply knowledge of composition, arrangement and production to create songs individually
  • can write basic lyrics for a song
