This course introduces the music production process through intensive group-based composing, recording and production in small studios. Students practice roles and responsibilities in collaborative studio work and are introduced to essential software, tools and workflows. Students will collaborate with second-year students to complete productions in larger studios. The course aims to establish sound study and studio habits and an active production culture that supports long-term professional development.
The candidate:
- has knowledge of basic studio work and sound production software
- has introductory knowledge of midi and file types in Audio Production Software
- has a basic industry overview of roles and career opportunities in sound and music production for the music and media industry
- has a basic understanding of collaboration, areas of responsibility and roles in songwriting and studio work
- has knowledge on how to study and acquire knowledge in sound and music production
- has basic theoretical knowledge of sound and it’s analogies
- has an introductory understanding of music theory, ear training and songwriting
- has basic knowledge of microphones and recording methodology
- has basic knowledge of studio technology, sound processing and sound production history
- has introductory knowledge of the music production process from recording to mixing
The candidate:
- can apply knowledge to the basic operation of a DAW
- can apply knowledge to be part of a production team in a studio setting
- Can work together with equals in a group to compose and produce a larger amount of music with a deadline
- Can carry out a music production process individually and together in a team, applying relevant technical knowledge and methodology
The candidate:
• can carry out music production as part of a team at a foundational level
• can carry out a simple audio recording and file import/export
• can build relations with fellow students in a production process
• can apply knowledge and skills to musical ideas, and develop them into basic music productions through a production process, applying appropriate recording methodology and technology individually and in a team
In this course, the following teaching and learning methods can be applied, but are not limited to:
- Lecture: Educator-led presentations or activities providing knowledge, skills, or general competencies in the subject area.
- Group work: Collaborative activities where students work together to solve problems or complete tasks.
- Tutoring: One-on-one or small group sessions with an instructor for personalized guidance and support.
- Student presentations: Opportunities for students to demonstrate their understanding of course material by presenting to peers.
- Online lessons: Digital content delivered via an online learning platform.
- Guidance: Individualized advice and direction from instructors to support students in their learning journey.
- Workshops: Practical sessions focused on hands-on application of theoretical concepts or skills.
- Self-study: Independent study where students engage with course material on their own without any teacher support.
