About the Course

The course provides insight into and practical knowledge of basic design techniques for the development of user-oriented solutions or services for web and mobile devices. The course provides insight into the various stages of a design process and basic competence in visual design, as well as basic design principles such as composition and grid. The candidate learns about profile elements such as typography, colour, imagery and graphic elements. The candidate is provided with basic insight into the structure and production of websites.

Course Relevance
Appropriate and thoughtful design creates good user experiences. In a technology-driven subject it can be easy to overlook visual design. Having a good understanding of the basic design process, as well as visual design principles, prepares the candidate with the necessary tools to work with Front-end development and related fields of study. The course provides a good starting point for collaboration with both graphic designers and interaction designers.

Learning outcomes - Knowledge

The Candidate:

  • has knowledge of the central concepts and processes used in visual design of user- oriented solutions and services for web and mobile devices
  • has basic knowledge about the structure of websites and interactive products
  • has knowledge of the concepts composition, grid and the basic design principles used for screen-based solutions
  • has basic knowledge of identity elements and the concepts typography, colour, graphical elements
  • has knowledge of tools and techniques for image editing and design
  • has insight into relevant standards and current design processes from idea to finished product
  • has insight into methods, techniques and tools for elaboration and presentation of ideas, sketches, prototypes and simple visual elements
  • can update their vocational knowledge of visual designing user-oriented solutions for web and mobile devices
  • understands the importance of how good visual design can support value creation for businesses, organizations or individuals

The Candidate:

  • can apply knowledge of the central concepts and processes for visual designing user-friendly solutions and services for web and mobile devices
  • can apply knowledge about basic design principles and perform development of simple layouts for web-based solutions and services
  • can apply basic knowledge about identity elements such as typography, colour and graphic elements and perform simple development or editing of visual elements for on-screen use
  • can find information and material regarding visual design for screen-based solutions and services

The Candidate:

  • understands the ethical principles that apply for using visual means in the development of user-friendly web solutions
  • has developed an ethical attitude in relations to using visual means
  • can carry out or process simple identity elements and put them together into a layout for use in screen-based solutions and services
