The topics covered are:
- The need for holistic perspectives in management accounting as foundation for developing business management
- Traditional and modern approaches to management accounting and control - the link between strategy and financial management
- Financial accounting (management accounting and control) as part of financial and business management
- Design, implementation and use of management accounting and control systems in various organizational contexts
- Management tools, calculation models, and management data such as budgets, forecasts, residual income models, balanced scorecard, activity-based costing and cost targeting
- Performance measurement and performance management
- Management accounting and control and operational research/management science
- Management accounting and control and sustainability
- Management accounting and control and transformation processes
- The changing role of the function of management accounting and control in organization and society (because of digitalization etc.)
Learning Outcome
Upon completion of the course, the candidate shall:
- have profound knowledge about traditional and modern approaches to management accounting and control (k1)
- have in-depth knowledge on criticism of traditional management models (k2)
- have profound knowledge about the connection between management models and strategies for implementation (k3)
- have detailed knowledge on the theoretical foundation and properties in economic and business management (k4)
- be able to discuss and analyse developments from traditional management accounting to business management (k5)
- have in-depth knowledge on the development from traditional management accounting to innovative models on management, control and performance measurement (k6)
Upon completion of the course, the candidate shall be able to:
- critically reflect on the design and application of different theoretical perspectives, models, and approaches within the field of management accounting and control (f1)
- apply theoretical and analytical preconditions in management accounting and control in relations to the needs in businesses in their current situation (f2)
Upon completion of the course, the candidate shall be able to:
- identify ethical issues within management accounting and control (g1)
- communicate how management models can contribute in investigating businesses strategic implementation (g2)
- apply research-based knowledge and critical reflection in the solution of complex management accounting and control problems (g3)
The following teaching methods are used:
- Lectures
- Problem solving
- Case studies
- Discussions
The teaching activities at the meetings are aligned with the expectation that students have prepared for the relevant meeting by reading and other self-learning activities, including written work (see coursework requirements). Expected total work effort in the course is 187.5-225 hours (according to ECTS standard).
- Mandatory homework assignments must be handed in before each teaching module (a total of 4). Two will be individual, and two will be in groups (in groups of up to three students). Three out of four homework assignments must be passed to be allowed to take the exam. The students themselves are responsible for forming groups.
- Attendance on at least 50% of the courses lectured teaching.
- 4 hours written, individual school exam (counts 60% of the grade).
- Homework assignment with a given problem, in groups of up to three students (counts 40% of the grade).
Both exams must be passed for the student to pass the course.
Graded A-F, where E is minimum for passing the exam.
At the group exam, all group members are responsible for all content in the answer.
