Emnets innhold

Simulation is a key method for practicing skills and procedures in both education and professional settings. Through extended reality (XR), which includes VR and AR technologies, we gain access to realistic experiences and scenarios that are otherwise difficult to recreate in traditional learning environments.

This course provides participants with the opportunity to explore and experiment with various types of XR-based simulations in pedagogical contexts. We examine how such simulations can be used to practice professional conversations and dialogues, communicate subject knowledge, and manage challenging situations. The course places particular emphasis on learning design that integrates simulation into teaching and professional development.

Through hands-on activities and modeling, participants will develop skills in using XR simulations as tools for creative learning activities, storytelling, and profession-oriented training.

Contents

  • Skills training in practice-oriented, virtual environments
  • Technology-supported learning design
  • Collaboration and communication in virtual environments
  • The facilitator’s role in simulation training

Læringsutbytte

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will have achieved the following learning outcomes:

Kunnskap

The student

  • has advanced knowledge of theories underlying learning design with XR technology
  • has solid knowledge of central characteristics of XR as a technology and the opportunities and challenges involved in using simulations for teaching and learning
  • has good insight into ethical, social, and practical aspects of the facilitator’s role in learning design with XR
Ferdigheter

The student

  • can critically assess and communicate research on different types of learning design and the use of XR technology as a learning resource
  • can apply pedagogical theory and concepts in planning and facilitation of a cohesive learning design using XR technology
  • can critically discuss the role and significance of XR for learning and pedagogical development in schools and workplaces with professionals and the public
Generell kompetanse

The student

  • can reflect on the significance of XR technology for practical skills training and historical dissemination, and how different types of learning design can support this
  • can apply theoretical knowledge and concepts in critical assessments of XR as a resource in developing competences and skills in various contexts
  • can participate in the planning and implementation of cohesive learning design using XR simulations in collaboration with others
Arbeids- og undervisningsformer

The course is part of a session-based programme, which means that students must expect both independent work and digital interaction in the periods between physical sessions. The teaching is organised as a combination of lectures, academic discussions, practical testing, group work, and work with curriculum and supplementary literature.

Active student participation and sharing of experiences are encouraged, including through the use of digital collaboration tools, learning platforms, and student presentations. Teaching activities are carried out in close cooperation with experts and resources connected to the Technology-rich Learning Lab (TLV) at the university, which offers facilities for experimentation, creative practices, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Obligatoriske aktiviteter
  • 75% mandatory attendance in accordance with the semester plan. Students are responsible for ensuring their attendance is registered.
  • Individual reflection paper
