Course content

The thesis is an independent scientific investigation into a topic within the broad concept of applied ecology. The thesis will be in the form and structure of a manuscript intended to be submitted to an international scientific journal. It is preferably written in English, but any Scandinavian language is accepted.

After successful completion of the course, the student will have the following knowledge, skills, and general competence. 

Knowledge

The student

  • Has advanced knowledge on theories and research methods in applied ecology.
  • Has extensive knowledge on the most updated scientific literature within a specific topic in applied ecology chosen by the student.
Skills

The student

  • Can formulate a research question.
  • Can plan, design, and conduct an independent scientific study of considerable size, including data collection and analysis.
  • Can find, analyze, and critically evaluate various sources of information and use them to structure and formulate arguments, and to place their own study in a larger context.
  • Can present the results from own research to the general public and to the scientific community.
General competence

The student

  • Can communicate and discuss scientific research and its application with people of different backgrounds such as researchers, students, stakeholders, and the general public.
  • Can identify, analyze, and discuss relevant issues within research ethics  

 

Teaching and working methods
  • Independent work by the student under the supervision of a professional in the field.
  • In addition to the individual supervision, the students are encouraged to present and discuss their work with peers and the scientific community at campus.
Required coursework
  • A written contract between the student and the supervisor.
  • A written project plan.
  • An oral presentation of the project plan.

Form of assessment

The final written thesis, adjusted by a public oral presentation and a closed defense after thesis submission, is assessed using a grading scale from A-F, where E is the lowest passing grade. A document including the evaluation criteria and the routines for the defense are made available for the student, supervisor, and examiner.
