This course aims to provide students with up-to-date knowledge about indigenous cultures. Through studies of indigenous texts in English (including translated Sámi works), students will gain in-depth knowledge and awareness of indigenous issues, such as responses to colonial cultures, the ongoing discourses about indigeneity, environmental heritage, indigenous activism and awareness-raising. The texts will be discussed and analysed from indigenous, textual, cultural and didactic theories.

- has in-depth knowledge about a wide range of indigenous texts in English
- has in-depth knowledge about textual, cultural and historical theories relevant for indigenous studies

- can analyse texts through applying theories and methods from the field of indigenous studies
- can discuss topics from the field orally and in writing
- can conduct an independent, delimited research project in English under supervision and in accordance with the ethical norms for research
The student
- can analyse relevant theory and research ethical issues related to indigenous cultural expressions
- can communicate in English about academic issues with other students, experts and the general public
- shows a high degree of independence in the development of own ideas as a basis for oral and written assignments in English
The teaching is on campus and will be organised as lectures, seminars and group work. The learning platform Canvas will be used for course information.
- An attendance record of at least 80 % according to the semester plan. Students are responsible for registration of attendance.
- Oral presentation of the term paper or similar assignment
- Submission of at least two written assignments
An individual written term paper on a stated topic of 3000-4000 words (not including references). The assignment is written in English. Both language skills and content must be satisfactory to pass the exam. The exam is assessed with graded letter grades from A-F, where E is the lowest pass grade.
