The course targets all students and provides basic training in intercultural communication through a student active developmental learning approcah. The course has a holistic and constructivist approcah to intercultural competence devlopment. This means that we place emphasis on self reflection, active interaction and practical application of cultural general and cultural specific frameworks to facilitate the students intercultural competence development.
Learning Outcome
Upon completion of the course the student
- have a clear understanding of the concept intercultural communication and intercultural competence
- can describe methodes to further develop their intercultural competence
- can explain how culture shapes us and affect us, and how it is activated when our values and beliefs are challenged by cultual others
- can explain and give examples of etnosentrism, stereotypes, predjudices and unconsious cultural judgements
- can demonstrate with examples how our cultural background affects our judgment of others and other cultures
- can explain how different communication styles, communication paces and conflict styles affect communication
- have a clear understanding of why empathy and the ability to change prespective in intercultural encounters is key to mutual understanding across cultures
- have awarness and understanding of their own charachteristic ways of making meaning and acting in familiar and unfamiliar contexts
- can listen for understanding
- can ask and answer questions in a culturally sensitive way
- can recognize different communication styles, communication paces and conflict styles in intercultural encounters
- can respond mindfully in contexts that involve communication across differences
- can postpone judgement and communicate mindfully with people with different mindsets or communication styles than their own.
Student active classroom lectures. Group work and intercultural colloquium groups between classes. Self study and completion of mandatory home assignments prior to each lecture. Reflective assignments through 1) Writing an intercultural journal through the duration of the course and 2) Taking the Intercultural development Inventory (IDI) assessment – cross culturally tested and validated intercultural developmental tool that measures to what degree a person perceives cultural complexity, followed by an individual debrief of test results and the completion of a tailored Intercultural Development Plan (IDP).

- 90% attendance at intercultural colloquium groups
- Completion of five mandatory home assignments prior to lectures
- Completion of IDI assessment, debrief session and Intercultural Development Plan
- Completion of Intercultural Journal
