Learning Outcome
Upon successfully passing the course, students will have achieved the following learning outcomes:
Students
- can describe the different phases of a typical research project
- can explain the relationship between theory and empirical data
- can explain qualitative and quantitative research design and how they can be combined
- can explain basic qualitative and quantitative data collection methods
- can explain basic qualitative and quantitative analysis methods and describe how software can be used in analyses
- can reflect on the concepts of social science and social science research methods
Students
- can formulate a research question, as well as delimit and define key concepts
- can describe and exemplify a research project within the quantitative research tradition
- can carry out basic quantitative data collection
- can apply selected statistical methods in a quantitative analysis
- can describe and exemplify a research project within the qualitative research tradition
- can carry out basic qualitative data collection
- can carry out basic qualitative data analysis
Students
- can assess whether a research project is subject to notification to the data protection officer for research
- can assess choice of method, method use and the relationship between methods and conclusions in various academic presentations, both scientific and popular science
- has a methodological basis for being able to carry out an academic project at bachelor level, e.g. a bachelor’s thesis
Lectures, demonstration of statistical programmes and statistical analyses, exercises in the use of software and problem solving.
Submission of written work is required in order to take the examination. More detailed information (e.g. amount, scope, time and content) is provided by the course coordinator at the start of the course.
