Course content

Simulations are often used as a method to train different skills and procedures relating to training in both education and professional life. Virtual reality simulations (VR) provide us with access to realistic experiences and scenarios that can otherwise be difficult to practice.

The course allows for practical testing and exploration of different types of VR simulations in the context of topics such as school-home partnerships, global citizenship and historical empathy, as well as communication and skills training. The course places emphasis on exploring different types of learning designs using simulations in pedagogical and didactic contexts and will model how simulations in virtual realities can be incorporated as fruitful resources in creative learning activities, skills development and storytelling.

Artificial intelligence provides new opportunities to create and adapt new scenarios for skills training. Fully automated simulations allow for new forms of interaction and communication in virtual realities. The course explores the potential of the technology when it comes to how different types of learning designs can promote realistic scenarios for skills training and dissemination.

Contents

  • Skills training in practice-oriented, virtual environments
  • Technology-supported learning design
  • Interaction and communication in virtual environments
  • Exploring realistic new scenarios for simulation training

Learning Outcome

Upon successfully passing the course, students will have achieved the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge

The student will have

  • extensive knowledge of different types of learning designs for the use of digital technology
  • an advanced theoretical and conceptual understanding of the relationship between VR simulations/digital technology and knowledge and skills development
  • excellent knowledge of key characteristics of VR as a technology and the opportunities that can be found in the use of simulations in teaching and learning
  • in-depth knowledge of VR and artificial intelligence and the opportunities/challenges associated with the use of new technology in training and dissemination
Skills

The student will be able to

  • critically assess and disseminate research into different learning designs and use VR simulations as a learning resource
  • plan and implement a comprehensive learning design using VR simulations in an independent and professionally sound manner
  • discuss the role of VR and artificial intelligence and the importance thereof to learning and educational development in the current and future school system and working life in encounters with both professionals and the general public
General competence

The student will be able to

  • critically and independently reflect on the importance of VR simulations when it comes to practical skills training and storytelling and how different types of learning designs can support this
  • apply theoretical knowledge and professional concepts in critical assessments of VR as a resource in the development of skills in different contexts in a critical and independent manner
  • demonstrate the ability to facilitate and disseminate comprehensive learning designs using VR simulations in a professionally sound and well-researched manner
Teaching and working methods

Teaching will comprise a combination of lectures, group work and practical exploration and testing of VR simulations and learning designs. The INN University learning platform will be used for communication, sharing of academic content and resources and submission of assignments. The virtual platform, CORE, will be used to explore interaction and communication in virtual interfaces. Teaching will take place at the Future Classroom Lab (FCL), the learning workshop at INN University.

Required coursework
  • project work in groups related to the planning and development of a comprehensive learning design using VR simulations (and/or artificial intelligence). The work will result in a project report that will be submitted as a group assignment.
