Course content

  • Different inter-scientific perspectives in the study of children and young people. 

  • Different theoretical perspectives on the health and welfare of children and young people, upbringing and participation. Childhood and youth as social phenomena created in a historical and cultural context. 

  • How children and young people are shaped by and shape their own experiences of upbringing in different social contexts. 

Learning Outcome

Knowledge

Candidates: 

  • have in-depth knowledge about the subject area and can assess different theories and perspectives about children and young people’s upbringing and participation. 

  • can master inter-scientific theoretical perspectives in the study of children and young people’s upbringing and participation. 

  • can assess and analyse theories, methods, interpretations and forms of documentation about childhood and upbringing as a social, cultural and historical phenomenon. 

Skills

Candidates: 

  • can formulate issues for research and development projects on children and young people. 

  • can deal with complex academic questions and challenge established knowledge on the subject of children and young people. 

General competence

Candidates: 

  • can identify ethical issues related to research on children and young people. 

  • can participate in professional debates on the subject of children and young people. 

  • can assess the need for development and innovation within the subject area of children and young people.

Language of instruction: 

Teaching is mainly conducted in Scandinavian languages and English, depending on the native language of the lecturer. If there are participants who do not use Scandinavian languages, English is used as a course language. 

Required coursework

There is a requirement of 80% attendance in order to take the exam.

Individual essay (scope 3500 words).
