Course content

This course aims to give students the knowledge of how social development and changes locally, nationally and globally affect lifestyle-decisions and consequently the health for different individuals and groups. The students will learn how social inequality affects lifestyle-decisions and participation, and what consequences this can have for health. The students will be expected to apply and critically reflect on different methods to promote health and quality of life, counteract social inequality and contribute to meaningful activity and inclusive social development. The students will learn about the importance of patient’s rights and autonomy.

Upon passing the course, students have achieved the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge

The student

  • has knowledge about psychosocial and physical health determinants and how they influence the health and quality of life of the population 
  • has knowledge of how neglect, violence, abuse, drug problems and social inequality affects the health of an individual 
  • has knowledge of how cultural and social aspects affects the health of a population 
  • recognize the health promoting and illness-preventive effects of nutrition, exercise, hygiene and infection control 
  • has knowledge of health- and political prioritization on a communal, regional and national level  
Skills

The student

  • can reflect upon relevant knowledge to identify and follow up children, adolescents and adults who have been subjected to neglect, violence and abuse, and refer them to relevant health care professionals, if needed.  
  • can apply relevant knowledge to take care of children, adolescents and other especially vulnerable groups in society who needs follow up and/or health promoting measures 
  • can apply methods for mapping environmental factors influencing health, and get information about the health of the population  
  • can apply relevant knowledge about inclusion and equality and thus contribute to equal services for all individuals regardless of their sex, ethnicity, language, 

religion, level of functionality, sexual orientation, social background, gender identity and age 

General competence

The student

  • have insight into how culture and social aspects, including the status and rights of the indigenous Sami population, influence political prioritization and distribution of resources 
  • have insight into the association between health and education, work and living conditions 
  • have insight into and can communicate around developmental changes in society and how they affect the organization of our health care system and the work as a physical therapist
